Barbers Digest Issue #66 Ear Singeing, Tradition, Risk and UK Debate
Ear Singeing, Tradition, Risk and UK Debate

Right then… here we are again. The great British winter is finally packing its bags—slowly, reluctantly, like a guest who’s overstayed by three months—and just as the sun peeks out, so do the clients. Pale, scruffy, slightly confused… but suddenly desperate for a transformation.

Funny that.

Because every year it’s the same, isn’t it? All winter it’s “I’ll leave it,” “no one can see me under this hat,” and then—bang—first bit of sunshine and they want to look like they’ve just stepped off a fragrance campaign.

And who fixes that? You do.

Now, while you’ve been quietly keeping the country presentable, the powers that be have been rather busy too. This issue dives into the rather spicy topic of the new Employment Rights changes—because nothing says “relaxing haircut” like navigating contracts, shift notices, and what you can and can’t say to someone after six months . It’s the kind of update that makes you wonder if you’re running a barbershop or a law firm with scissors.

Then there’s the high street… still taking a bit of a battering. Costs up, margins squeezed, and yet somehow expected to keep the lights on, the doors open, and the standards high. The irony? We’re told small businesses are the backbone of the economy—just don’t expect them to be treated like it.

And let’s talk about the industry itself.

We’ve got debates around things like ear singeing—yes, actual flames near people’s heads—still knocking about like it’s 1850, while at the same time younger clients are walking in asking about hair systems like they’re ordering a flat white . It’s a strange old mix right now—half tradition, half transformation—and occasionally a bit of theatre thrown in for good measure.

But here’s the truth, and it hasn’t changed.

Strip it all back—regulations, trends, TikTok barbers, miracle products, and whatever the latest “must-have” service is this week—and the barbershop is still one of the few places left where people actually talk. Properly talk. No filters, no scripts, no nonsense.

It’s where confidence gets rebuilt, where problems get aired, and where—whether you like it or not—you become part barber, part therapist, part referee, and occasionally part miracle worker.

And that’s not something you can automate, outsource, or replace.

So as we head into the busy season, when the chairs are full, the days are long, and the requests get more ambitious by the minute, take a moment to appreciate what you’re really running.

It’s not just a shop.

It’s a frontline service for the nation’s confidence.

And frankly, you deserve a bit more credit for it.
