Barbers Digest Issue #62

BritishBarbersAssociation-BarbersDigest-September2024
A New Era of Workers

Greeting BBA Members,

What a summer it's been! The sun decided to make an extended appearance, and as any Englishman knows, when the sun comes out, so do the customers. Between managing sunburnt necks, the influx of tourists needing a fresh trim, and trying to avoid melting yourself, it’s been a busy few months for barbers across the nation. But let’s be honest, we all secretly enjoyed that rare sight of the big yellow orb in the sky—even if we had to squint at it between haircuts.

And speaking of those busy shops, haven’t we been reminded of just how much we love this craft? Yes, the clippers are always buzzing, the scissors always snipping, and no one has enough time for a decent cup of tea anymore. But through all the noise, there’s a steady rhythm—one of hard work, dedication, and pride in what we do. Because let's face it, even in the best of times, being a barber isn’t just about cutting hair. It’s about connection, about community. And let’s be even more honest: we all know the average barber does a better job at being a therapist than half the so-called professionals out there.

Now, on to the elephant in the room: these "tough economic times." Yes, we’re all feeling the pinch. But here’s the thing about us English—when the chips are down, we don’t moan (well, not too much). We dust ourselves off, adjust our collars, and get back to work. The truth is, there’s something to be said for weathering a storm with a stiff upper lip. Being proud of who we are and where we come from, especially when times are hard, is part of our DNA. After all, the world looks to us when they need a lesson in resilience. So, while the economy may be having a bit of a wobble, let’s remind ourselves that we’ve been through worse and come out looking sharper for it.

And how do we do that? By concentrating on what we do best: exceptional customer service. Yes, the hairstyles we craft are important, but it’s the experience we offer that keeps clients coming back through our doors. The banter, the attention to detail, the unmistakable feeling that they’re getting more than just a haircut—they’re getting a moment to pause, to chat, to feel like they matter. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to double down on that service. As we all know, happy customers tend to have a funny way of telling others where they can get the best trim in town.

So here’s to us—the barbers who keep Britain looking its best, no matter the weather or the economy. Let’s keep pushing forward, focusing on what we can control, and remember to find a moment to enjoy the ride. After all, as long as we have a decent pair of scissors, a kettle that works, and a sense of humour, we’ll be just fine.
