I opened my first Barbershop at the tender age of 20, this was a massive risk but something that I was pushed into a corner to do as the barbershop I worked in was being sold and I was not sure about my job.
I have to say it was one of the most hardest things I have ever had to do in my life, I sold my car let go of my rented room and crashed on a mates sofa for six months. The first year was so difficult. I already had a lot of clients but getting them to know you have opened a new shop and build new client was difficult, but I am pleased to say it worked!! It is still operating now with my brother now owning this shop.
The reason I started to teach barbering was plain and simple I could not find any decent barbers too work alongside myself my brother and my team, I started delivering the Barbering at Basingstoke college in 2005 and I had four students in September, by the January I already had nine students the word was getting about, finally there is a college that is delivering barbering training to a good standard.
This brings me to the BBA, The creation of the BBA was for one purpose to raise the profile and standards of British Barbering, I was fed up with us barbers being seen as hairdressers poor relation, this is why Im so dedicated to continually growing and strengthening the BBA and the Industry
Now with over 8500 members and this awesome new website I can say we have achieved what we set out to do, but there is a load more to come from the BBA and myself. I will be writing this blog fortnightly and trying to be as honest and personal as I can be for you all.
Mike Taylor does also have a life outside of barbering, I have a wife three children and 15 year old staffie Molly that are my world, I also love the 70’s and 80’s music films, tv shows and clothes. I am that stuck in these decades that might be why I support Ipswich Town for my sins. I drive a VW van and wouldn’t want to drive anything else, so simple life with the coolest things, family, Retro ways, VW vans and the mighty blues.
